মহালয়া (Mahalaya) মহালয়া বাঙালি সংস্কৃতি ও ধর্মীয় আচার-অনুষ্ঠানের এক অবিচ্ছেদ্য অঙ্গ। দেবীপক্ষের সূচনা ও পিতৃপক্ষের অবসান মহালয়ার দিনেই হয়। হিন্দু পঞ্জিকা অনুযায়ী আশ্বিন মাসের কৃষ্ণপক্ষের অমাবস্যা তিথিতেই মহালয়া পালিত হয়। এদিন থেকেই দুর্গোৎসবের আনুষ্ঠানিক সূচনা ধরা হয়। মহালয়ার সঙ্গে যুক্ত রয়েছে দুইটি প্রধান দিক—একদিকে দেবীপক্ষের আগমন, অপরদিকে পিতৃপক্ষের শ্রাদ্ধ। পিতৃপক্ষের শেষ দিনে মানুষ তাদের পূর্বপুরুষদের উদ্দেশ্যে তর্পণ ও পিণ্ডদান করেন। গঙ্গার ঘাটে, বিশেষত কলকাতার বাবুঘাট, আদি ঘাট, বা কাশীতে এই তর্পণের দৃশ্য বিশেষভাবে চোখে পড়ে। বাঙালি হিন্দু সমাজে বিশ্বাস করা হয়, এদিন পূর্বপুরুষদের আত্মা মর্ত্যে আগমন করেন এবং সন্তানের তর্পণ গ্রহণ করে তুষ্ট হন। মহালয়ার সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে আছে রেডিও সম্প্রচারের এক অনন্য ঐতিহ্য—বীরেন্দ্রকৃষ্ণ ভদ্রের কণ্ঠে মহিষাসুরমর্দিনী। ১৯৩১ সাল থেকে শুরু হওয়া এই সম্প্রচার আজও বাঙালি জীবনের অবিচ্ছেদ্য অংশ। ভোরবেলায় দেবী বন্দনা, সংস্কৃত স্তোত্র ও সংগীতের সঙ্গে ভদ্রর মহাকাব্যিক বর্ণনা বাঙালির দুর্গোৎসবের আবহ তৈরি করে। হাজার মানুষ রেডিওতে কানে কানে শোনেন সেই চ...
